Afro-Brazilian Grooves – Friday, July 31
Jul 31st, 2009 by Jalene

An evening of dance, community, and fun to benefit the Fremont Abbey Arts Center. Featuring Brazilian band, the infectious samba of Janelle Campoverde’s Afro-Brazilian dance students, and rumba dances by Cuban master José Carrión.
Where: The Fremont Abbey Arts Center, on the corner of N. 43rd and Fremont Avenue
When: 7-9pm
Why: The Fremont Abbey Arts Center is a non-profit community center hosting educational arts and cultural experiences for all ages. It’s mission is to help people express themselves and develop through the arts, thereby improving their lives and our society as a whole. The Abbey is a beautifully restored 1914 brick church, newly remodeled with a lot of volunteer labor. Janelle Campoverde’s Afro-Brazilian dance classes helped with some of the remodeling and are now happy to call it home. But the beautiful room where we dance needs additional work to improve the acoustics and moderate the thermostat, and we’re doing this benefit to support completing this work.
